Who Are We

Who Are We?

The Victorian Volcanic Plain (VVP) Biosphere Inc. is a group of people working to facilitate the formation of a UNESCO Biosphere within the VVP.

The volunteer committee meets regularly.

Lately we have been researching the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” program and other Biospheres, approaching local government and other stakeholders to assemble a team, and drafting a proposed Biosphere map and governance structure.

The aim of a Biosphere is to enable people living and working in that area to share knowledge that would enable them to conduct their business without causing further harm to the environment. Clean, green agriculture with intelligent land management would attract premium prices, while enhancing wildlife habitat to support “ecosystem services”.

Ecosystem services are the numerous benefits that humans obtain from the natural environment and functioning ecosystems. These benefits, such as clean air and water, crop pollination, and flood control, are vital for human survival and well-being. Essentially, ecosystems provide a wide range of goods and services that support life on Earth and contribute to human
economies and quality of life. Here is a more detailed breakdown:

TYPES OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES:

Provisioning:

These are the tangible products that humans obtain from ecosystems, like food (crops, fish), water (freshwater), fuel (wood), and medicinal resources.

Regulating:

Ecosystems regulate natural processes that benefit humans, including climate regulation (carbon storage, air purification), water purification (filtration by vegetation and soil), flood control (wetlands and forests), and pollination.

Supporting:

These are the fundamental processes that underpin all other ecosystem services, such as nutrient cycling (decomposition and soil formation), photosynthesis, and habitat provision.

Cultural:

These are the non-material benefits that people derive from ecosystems, including recreational opportunities, aesthetic enjoyment, spiritual enrichment, and cultural heritage.

IMPORTANCE OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES:

Human Survival:

Ecosystems provide the basic necessities for human survival, such as clean air, water, and food.

Economic Value:

Many ecosystem services contribute to economic activities, including agriculture, tourism, and resource extraction.

Human Well-being:

Ecosystems positively impact human health and well-being, providing recreational opportunities, aesthetic beauty, and
spiritual fulfillment.

Biodiversity:

Healthy ecosystems with a diversity of species and habitats are essential for providing a wide range of ecosystem services.
